A New Kind of Fund-Raiser for Carrigaline

We are all used to schools raising money with table quizzes, race nights and coffee mornings. But Carrigaline’s own Educate Together National School, open since September 2008, offered something different. In keeping with the Educate together ethos of encouraging individuality while fostering community spirit, the Parent Association of the school invited the Cork Circus Street Theatre company to perform their new show, Circus Explosion, for the children of Carrigaline and their families.

The Community Complex was buzzing as the Cork Circus team created magic in the darkened hall. Adults and children alike were entranced by the special atmosphere. Red flowing backdrops caught the glow of coloured lights and set the stage for an exciting performance. Highlights included an artist with crystal balls running along his arms as if magnetically attached. Another swung glowing pois at the ends of ropes so that they appeared to float by themselves in circles and patterns. Even the children were drawn into the show. A fierce dragon could only be tamed by a child, and a clown who had lost his face got a new one painted on by young helpers. In this era of on-screen entertainment the children in the audience loved getting involved with the performance. The show reached its peak with a fast, furious and daring acrobatic act which culminated in a five-metre high human pyramid.

Audience reaction was enthusiastic. “I’d give this 10 out of 10.” “Cork Circus should come every year!” “We need more of this!” A home-grown cultural event, sourced entirely from within the community, this was a different kind of fund-raiser with thrills for all ages. There was also a raffle, disco and refreshments, including delicious pizza from The Italian Corner, made by Alex Moroni who is already well-known at the Friday morning Country Market. All agreed that the event was well-organised and a fun way to spend the day.

As a young school, Carrigaline Educate Together is delighted with the success of their first major fund-raiser, Circus Explosion, and hopes to do more of this type of event in the future. As well as raising funds for the school it made a vibrant contribution to the community’s cultural life. CETNS wishes to thank all the many sponsors, parents and friends who made this Circus Family Day possible.
